Welcome, Students!

Greetings Students of World Literature!

Let's begin our class blog, where we discuss literature -- some of the titles and authors and literary elements  that we are focusing on in class.

Last week, we all read and enjoyed The Woman Who Had No Prejudices. Of course my favorite part of the story was that it had such a happy ending -- especially after reading the outrageously creepy Cask of Amontillado.

Speaking of The Cask, here's a drawing I came across that is one artist's rendering of the setting in the end of that short story. Scary, huh? Give me Maxim doing flips for his new bride any day over a character being bricked into the wall by a psychopath.

But maybe happy endings aren't for everyone. So tell me, dear student: what has been your favorite short story so far? And why? Don't just give me a title. Tell me, and tell your classmates as well, what you loved about the story that has been your fave...and maybe you can convince the rest of us that your favorite is the best one of all.

  1. My favorite story so far would be the same as you. "The Woman Who Had No Prejudice" is a very cute story. It has a sweet ending unlike most of the books that we have read so far with mystery, death, or a scary plot. This one talks about a man who falls in love with a woman and he proposes, and she says yes. What's funny about the story is Maxim's secret which he thinks is so dark and bad he believes that if he tells her then she will not accept him. In the end, the secret really isn't that bad. The short story has a little romance, a little mystery, and even a little bit of comedy. It's an adorable story and I think everyone should read!~Hannah K.

    1. What a great write-up, Hannah! You are correct -- it has a little bit of everything. And a nice, sweet happy ending is always enjoyable! Good work here.

  2. My favorite story has to be "The cask of Amontillado". I love Poe's eerie style of writing. I was shaking from the first sentence to the last. I hope we read more stories like it. I loved the plot. I loved the twist at the end. It couldn't have written better. - Kathleen Kyd

    1. Excellent comment, "K.K." We will be sure and find some creepy stuff for you. A friend of mine recommends a short story by Stephen King... we shall see!

  3. My favorite story was "The Woman Who Had No Prejudices". I enjoyed the happy ending also. It was very entertaining, and easy to understand. Stories with happy endings are much better than those with bad endings.

  4. My favorite story was "The Women Who Had No Prejudices". I really like how they made the story in the end very happy for the couple. Also how even though Maxim came from a quiet embarrassing past his wife still loved him and thought it was the funniest thing in the world.

    1. I liked The Red Headed League because it was the only one that held my attention for more than two minuets. it did this because I like to try to solve the mysteries before Sherlock.

  5. My favorite short story was The Cask... because it was exciting and put me on edge. Even though it was kinda creepy and disturbing in some ways it was entertaining. I have always found Poe's writings entertaining even though most are creepy and am hoping to read his story The Raven this year.

  7. My favorite book was"The Cask of Amontillado". I really loved the way that Poe shows us the entire story through the crazy guys head. To me it seemed like Poe did that so it was more of a mystery book. Even though the whole story was rather grim and dark it was very fun to read.

  9. My favorite story was "Mammon and the Archer". I liked the twist at the end even though I don't think that money can really buy you love. Even though Aunt Ellen wasn't right about how Anthony couldn't "buy his way out of this one", the story still had a happy ending.

  10. My favorite story was the Red-Headed League. I like the way the story is seen through the eyes of Watson instead of through Sherlock, who is able to figure everything out almost instantaneously. It is one of those books that lets you try to figure out what happens in the end before it actually happens, and always has a very satisfying ending.
